Retainer Instructions

Taking care of your retainer is very important! Please contact our friendly team at Almond Orthodontics if you have any questions about caring for your retainer!

  • Until your orthodontist, Dr. Almond, instructs otherwise, wear your retainer at all times!
  • Take your retainer out while eating, and be sure to always put it back in its case. Most retainers are lost in restaurants and school lunchrooms!
  • Clean your retainer once every day. Brush it thoroughly with a toothbrush and toothpaste, and use warm, but not hot, water. Brushing your retainer helps to remove plaque and eliminates odors. You can use orthodontic appliance cleaners, such as Efferdent®, but this does not take the place of brushing.
  • If your retainer is not in your mouth, it should always be in its case! You don’t want your pet to chew on it!
  • When you first get your retainer, it may be a little difficult to speak. To get used to it faster, practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud.
  • Retainers are breakable, so take good care of yours. Please call our orthodontic office in Richland, Washington immediately if your retainer is lost or broken.
  • If you think your retainer may need to be adjusted, or if you have any other concerns or questions, please call us at Almond Orthodontics. Do not try to adjust your retainer yourself!
  • Bring your retainer to every orthodontic appointment.
  • Retainer replacements are expensive, so be sure to treat yours with care. When properly cared for, retainers can last for years!
  • Remove your retainer while swimming.
  • Be sure to keep your retainer away from pockets, hot water, hot car dashboards, the washing machine, and napkins.
